Breakdown of Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Levels
Level 1:
Foundational
- Objective: To protect Federal Contract Information (FCI).
- 15 Requirements: The basic safeguarding requirements in FAR 52.204-21 for information not intended for public release.
- Assessment: Annual self-assessment and annual affirmation, entered in SPRS.
Level 2:
Advanced
- Objective: To protect Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
- 110 Requirements: The security requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2, already required by DFARS 252.204-7012.
- Assessment: Self-assessment or a certification assessment by a Cyber AB-authorized C3PAO, as your contract specifies, every three years plus an annual affirmation. While CMMC Phase 2 is paused, C3PAO certification is voluntary unless your contract or prime contractor requires it.
Level 3:
Expert
- Objective: To protect CUI against advanced persistent threats (APTs).
- 134 Requirements: All 110 Level 2 requirements plus 24 selected requirements from NIST SP 800-172.
- Assessment: Government-led assessment by DCMA DIBCAC every three years, plus an annual affirmation. Requires a final Level 2 (C3PAO) certification first.
DO NOT DELAY
CMMC READINESS OFTEN TAKES
6 TO 12 MONTHS
Most organizations spend six to twelve months on gap assessment, remediation, and documentation before they're ready for a C3PAO assessment, and longer when starting from scratch. It is important to act now. If CMMC compliance is not met you are at risk of the following:
Losing DOD contracts
Erosion of Trust
Legal & Regulatory Repercussions
Competitive Disadvantage
Increased Vulnerability

FAQs
Common CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification) Questions
What is CMMC?
CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification) is the DoD program that verifies defense contractors protect Federal Contract Information (FCI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). It has three levels: Level 1 covers the 15 requirements in FAR 52.204-21, Level 2 covers the 110 requirements in NIST SP 800-171, and Level 3 adds 24 requirements from NIST SP 800-172.
How can I prepare for a CMMC audit?
Shellproof Security offers CMMC audit preparation services that provide guidance on the documentation required for audit purposes and help to ensure that all necessary security measures are in place.
What is the timeline for achieving CMMC compliance?
The timeline for achieving CMMC compliance depends on the level of maturity required for your organization. ShellProof can help you evaluate your current cybersecurity posture and develop a roadmap for achieving compliance.
Is Shellproof Security an authorized C3PAO?
Yes. Shellproof Security is authorized by the Cyber AB as a Certified Third-Party Assessment Organization (C3PAO) and is listed in the CMMC Marketplace. As an Authorized C3PAO, Shellproof is qualified to conduct official CMMC Level 2 certification assessments for defense contractors.
How do I choose a C3PAO?
Start by confirming the firm is Authorized or Accredited on The Cyber AB Marketplace, then make sure it hasn’t done consulting work for you. From there, compare the team’s experience with environments like yours, how thoroughly they scope before quoting, total cost, lead time, and how they handle quality assurance and appeals. We cover all seven criteria, plus the questions to ask and the red flags to avoid, in our guide on how to choose a C3PAO.
How can I verify Shellproof’s C3PAO authorization?
Look us up directly on The Cyber AB Marketplace. Our listing is here. Any C3PAO you consider should be listed there under its legal name; a badge on a website isn’t proof.
What should we have ready before contacting a C3PAO?
Your System Security Plan, your current SPRS score and NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment, network and data-flow diagrams showing where CUI lives, an asset inventory, and any open POA&M items. Having these ready gets you an accurate quote faster. See our C3PAO selection guide for the full checklist.
Who needs to comply with CMMC?
CMMC applies to defense contractors and subcontractors at every tier that process, store, or transmit Federal Contract Information (FCI) or Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) under DoD contracts. The contract specifies the level required, based on the type of information you handle.
What happens if I don't achieve CMMC compliance?
If you don't achieve CMMC compliance, you may not be eligible to bid on certain government contracts or work with certain government agencies. It can also lead to reputational damage and financial losses due to data breaches or cyber-attacks. If you have any other questions or would like to learn more about our CMMC services, please contact us. Our team of cybersecurity experts is ready to assist you in achieving CMMC compliance and securing your sensitive government data.
What is the cost of achieving CMMC compliance?
The cost of achieving CMMC compliance varies depending on the level of maturity required for your organization and the complexity of your existing security measures. Our cybersecurity company can provide you with a customized quote based on your specific business requirements.
Can Shellproof assess our organization if Shellproof helped us prepare?
No. Cyber AB program rules prohibit a C3PAO from assessing an organization to which it has provided CMMC consulting or remediation services. Shellproof operates its assessment function separately from its advisory work, so a contractor engages Shellproof either for readiness advisory or for its certification assessment, not both.
How can I learn more about your CMMC services?
If you would like to learn more about our CMMC services or schedule a consultation, please contact us. Our team of cybersecurity experts is ready to assist you in achieving CMMC compliance and securing your sensitive government data.
Is CMMC the same as NIST 800-171?
No. NIST SP 800-171 is the set of 110 security requirements for protecting Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) in non-federal systems. CMMC is the DoD program that verifies contractors have implemented them, through a self-assessment or, for Level 2 certification, an assessment by a Cyber AB-authorized C3PAO. CMMC also adds an annual affirmation of continued compliance.
CMMC Certified Professionals
While some companies value having CMMC registered practitioners on staff. We took our training a step further and are trained to provide CMMC readiness services as well as be involved in CMMC assessment teams. CMMC Professionals are a step up from the Registered Practitioners and help contractors in the Defense Industrial Base on their path to certification against the CMMC standard.
